Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame guard who as union head helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died. He was 63.
Upshaw’s death was announced by the NFL Players Association, which he headed for a quarter century.
An interesting quote from Upshaw came not long ago, and was found on ESPN today.
“I’m going to tell you what I told my [three] boys a few years ago,” Upshaw said. “We have an age requirement in the union — you have to leave at age 65. Well, I’m 60 years old, so between now and then, I’ll decide.
“I will not be here past age 65. But, no, I’m not planning on leaving any time soon.”
